Actually, to provide lesbian, gay and bisexual people with equal treatment the NHS has to recognise that they have some very specific health needs.
Mental health is a particular concern. Our research shows 3% of gay men have attempted suicide in the last year alone and 50% of lesbians under the age of 20 have self-harmed.
These are significant health issues that the NHS needs to take seriously. To do that, it has to acknowledge that a person’s sexual orientation isn’t just a sexual health issue.All too often, that very obvious fact seems to be forgotten.
