Yet more 1970s New York Subway fun as captured by my trusty Kodak Pocket Instamatic in April 1976. Burned out, graffiti covered MTA train in Midtown Manhattan. (and this was the Express train!)

”The song just came out last night, and Brooklyn knows the words!” Pharrell performed “Get Lucky” for the first time last night at the HTC One launch in Brooklyn. He was so thrilled to perform the track that he repeated the song three times in a row.

I shall ignore the fact that the performance was for the HTC.
There. Said it.

The 1961 Midtown Manhattan Study, for instance, indicated that nearly eighty-five per cent of New Yorkers had some degree of mental disorder, a number that beggars common sense, unless perhaps you’re a Woody Allen fan.

The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center officially opened 40 years ago on April 4, 1973.  At the time of their completion they were the tallest buildings in the world.

These photos, taken shortly after the World Trade Center was completed in the early 1970s, are part of the DOCUMERICA series, a program sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency to photographically document subjects of environmental concern in America during the 1970s.

Find more images from DOCUMERICA at “Searching for the Seventies: The DOCUMERICA Photography Project,” now open at the National Archives in Washington, DC.
