When he was 19 years old, Orlando Cruz competed in the Sydney Olympics. He had a girlfriend in Puerto Rico and a growing reputation as a fast, tough, counter-punching lefthander. Before he left for home, he had his first sexual experience with a man, pitching him into a state of complete confusion. “I was wondering, ‘What is wrong with me? Am I crazy? What is going on?’” Cruz says.

Just the victory parade to go, and then Britain’s summer of love will be over. London 2012, the capital’s greatest party in living memory, is done. At the risk of using up the entire annual quota of Guardian editorial schmaltz in one go, this past month it feels as if most of us have been (as Boris Johnson would have it) cropdusted with serotonin, the happiness hormone.
